April 25, 2004 - Chile Beat Trinidad & Tobago

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados � Chile struggled to defeat Trinidad & Tobago 4-2 in a fifth-eighth place playoff match on Sunday at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

Sandra Wenz, Carolina Garc�a , Daniela Infante and Paula Infante scored for the South Americans, while Oire Trotman and Stacey Siu Butt netted for Trinidad & Tobago.

Chile set the pace from the very beginning reaching their rival circle dangerously. But Trinidad�s back row and goalie Marreen Jacob defended well.

The South Americans continued attacking but crashed against their own imprecisions.

Finally their perseverance was rewarded when Sandra Wenz deflected a corner shot to put her team in the lead, in the 17th minute.

Chile improved their accuracy to increase the gap through Carolina Garc�a, in the 30th minute.

The match was halted due to a powercut, in the 30th minute, but lights returned after 10 minutes and the game continued.

Three minutes from half-time, Chile increased the lead to 3-0 with a wonderful goal by Daniela Infante.

The Caribbean team tightened their marks after half-time, pushing Chile hard.

Then, they closed the gap � in the 40th minute � through Oire Trotman, who capitalized on a corner rebound.

Chile lost their way, while Trinidad & Tobago continued attacking to net the second, in the 53th minute, from a deflection by Stacey Siu Butt.

But the South Americans regained control in the last part of the match to seal their 4-2 victory, two minutes before the final whistle.

Barbados Also Win, Play Chile For Fifth Place

Barbados put up a good performance to defeat Netherlands Antilles 3-0 in the the second fifth-eighth place playoff match.

Patrina Brathwaite surprised everybody netting just 25 seconds from the start.

The other two goals were netted by Charlia Warner, in the 17th minute, and Tricia-ann Greaves, in the 31st minute.

Netherlands Antilles: Hartmans van de Rijdt; Muys, Dumas, Gonesh, Hanstede; van Asma, Mulder, Mellena; Kokkeler, Wellens and Thies. Also played: Dennert-Kleijn, van den Barselaar, Visser, Holten and Vloeimans. Coach: Patrick van Bergen.

Umpires: Lisa Marcano (Trinidad & Tobago) and Claudia Videla (Chile).

With these results, Trinidad & Tobago will play Netherlands Antilles for the seventh place, while Chile will clash against Barbados for the fifth position on Tuesday.
