Peru defeated Brazil 2-0 in the fifth day of the men�s tournament in the 8th South American (ODESUR) Games at the Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires on Tuesday. Brazil attacked from the start, producing the best goal chances. However, their own imprecisions and the Peruvian goalie prevented the Brazilians to open the score. In the second half, Peru moved up from defence, pushing Brazil towards their own area. The Peruvian produced several goal chances, while Brazil answered from counter-attacks but failed to net, missing also the penalty corners opportunities. In one of these attacks, the stick of a Peruvian forward was blocked inside the circle and the penalty stroke converted by Alonso Vargas to put Peru 1-0 ahead. Peru continued with their strategy to increase the gap from a direct penalty corner through their captain Jan Henze, in the 64th minute. ARGENTINA BEAT CHILE, REACH FINAL AND PAN-AMERICAN GAMES The women�s Argentine team deservedly beat Chile 6-0 to reach the final of the tournament and also qualified for the 2007 Pan-American Games to take place in July in Rio de Janeiro at the 8th South American (ODESUR) Games. Argentina were slightly superior in the first half, a difference which was showed in the score as the local side went to the break leading 2-0 with goals from Rosario Luchetti, in the 11th minute, and Florencia D�El�a, in the 20th. Nevertheless, Chile showed an organized play to reach Argentina�s circle with several penalty corners, well saved by the Argentine back row and keeper Bel�n Succi. The title holders increased the lead through Silvina D�El�a from a direct penalty corner shot, in the 29th minute. Argentina increased their ground domination in the second half, in front of a rival who did not give up, but their efforts �crashed� against the solid local defence. The Argentine side netted the 4-0, in the 39th minute, through Luchetti again. ARGENTINA, CHILE REACH FINAL AND PANAMERICAN GAMES BERTHS The men�s Argentine team followed the steps of the women�s team as by defeating Uruguay 7-0 they qualified for the final of the tournament and also won a berth for the 2007 Pan-American Games, in Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday at the Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Argentina will play the final against Chile, who yesterday had a rest day as Paraguay did not come due to financial problems. Chile also qualified for the Pan-American Games. Though Argentina dominated the first half, it was Uruguay who pushed Argentina against their area, in the first 10 minutes, reaching the circle with several penalty corners, which failed to capitalize on. But after these first 10 minutes, the local side gained control of play to open the score, in the 11th minute, thanks to a penalty corner converted by Argentina�s captain Germ�n Orozco. From then on, the title holders increased the gap netting four more goals through Lucas Rossi, in the 20th minute; Rodrigo Saliva, in the 22nd; Juan Manuel Saladino, in the 31st and Marco Riccardi, a minute later. Uruguay tightened the mark after half-time and along with a brilliant performance by their keeper Mariano Mallo, prevented a big amount of goals as Argentina only scored two more, by Lucas Argento, in the 46th, and Riccardi, in the 58th.
